What is C? · C
Ch 1 · Introduction to Programming & C — card 2 of 2.
C is one of the oldest and most influential programming languages — and it is still everywhere. It is a low-level language, meaning it works close to the hardware, giving you direct control over memory and speed. Operating systems, databases, games, and the firmware inside your devices are largely built in C. Learning C teaches you how a computer *really* works underneath the friendly surface of higher-level languages.
Why C is worth learning:
- ✅ Extremely fast and efficient — close to the metal
- ✅ Teaches you how memory and the computer actually work
- ✅ The foundation that C++, Java, Python, and many others are built on
- ✅ Powers operating systems, embedded devices, and game engines
Where C is used in the real world:
- 💻 Operating systems (Windows, Linux, macOS cores)
- 🚗 Embedded systems — cars, appliances, microcontrollers
- 🎮 Game engines and high-performance software
- 🛰️ Spacecraft, robotics, and real-time systems
