A Prediction Machine · AI & LLM Literacy
Ch 1 · What Is an AI Language Model? — card 1 of 2.
An AI language model (an LLM — Large Language Model) does one deceptively simple thing: given some text, it predicts what word is likely to come next. Do that over and over, one word at a time, and you get whole sentences, code, and explanations.
- 🔮 What it is: a giant pattern-matcher trained on huge amounts of text to guess likely next words.
- 🚫 What it is not: a brain that "understands", and not a database that "looks things up".
When you type "The capital of France is", the model has seen that pattern a billion times and predicts "Paris" — not because it knows geography, but because that word fits the pattern best.
